The Viewletin
An Inside ‘Take’ on All Things Viewlet
~by ViewletMarm

As a Viewlet Author, you are aware that when you save a Viewlet project all of the elements are contained within a single project folder in an open source format. This open source format allows you to access the XML file directly (though not recommended if you don't know what you are doing) as well as the Resources and Output folders. What I find is often confusing to Viewlet authors, though, is what is the process for 'sharing' the source project files with other team member, for use on another computer or perhaps to forward to Qarbon support, when needed. This is easily explained.

Past versions of ViewletBuilder (prior to version 7) and ViewletQuiz (prior to version 4) saved project folders in a single compressed file. So, if you wanted to share files with others, for whatever reason, you simply provided the project file saved by your Viewlet Authoring application. Now, with the open source format, authors must now create their own compressed project file. The feature to do this is called project Archive. This tool, now available in the current versions of both ViewletBuilder and ViewletQuiz, allow you to create a single, compressed file (QVP or VIE) that can then be reopened within the applicable Viewlet Authoring application.

The process to create a project file archive takes just a few steps:

  1. Open your Viewlet project within ViewletBuilder or ViewletQuiz.

  2. Select File > Create Archive from the menu bar.

  3. In the Save File As dialog:

    1. Select a folder to save the file in (by default, it will save it in the project folder).

    2. Give the file a name (by default, it will use the same name as the project itself).

    3. Select the appropriate file extension (QVP-ViewletBuilder, VIE-ViewletQuiz).

    4. Click Save to create the file archive and close the dialog.

  4. At this point, you can close your Viewlet Authoring application, locate the newly created project file archive and use it to share with a team member, open on another computer with the applicable authoring application or forward to Qarbon support for testing...whatever is the case.

Remember, next time you want to share your Viewlet project source files with others, do NOT just send the QVPX or the VIEX file--that won't be enough. Create the proper project archive and send the resulting QVP or VIE compressed file and it will open just fine in the associated authoring application with no problem.

That's it for this blog.

Until next time...
Happy Viewleting!
