An Inside ‘Take’ on All Things Viewlet

Qarbon's authoring applications offer many diverse options to help you compete in the international marketplace. As you design your Viewlets for your global audience, one of the tools you might consider leveraging is Text for Translations. This feature allows you to export all of the text within your Viewlet out to an XML file, which can then be edited outside your Viewleting Authoring application (ViewletBuilder, ViewletQuiz) using a third-party app such as Notepad or WordPad. Once edits are made, the XML file is resaved and then imported back into your Viewlet, where text edits are automatically updated throughout your project.

At first glance, the Text for Translations tool is a great way to convert your Viewlet into different languages quickly in just a few steps. And, that's fine for a lot of authors, but let's take a closer look at this feature.

The key to Text for Translations is in how you use the exported XLM file. You have two options when exporting the text from your Viewlet project. You can opt to export the file:

  1. XML with text formatting: Includes all the font formatting such as font type, size, attributes, alignment as well as the actual text, etc. This is the perfect choice for those wanting to edit text properties and text outside of the project, using the XML file. Recommended for more advanced users.

    OR

  2. XML without text formatting: Includes mainly the basic text. So, for those primarily wanting to focus on JUST the text editing itself, this is the best choice since the file will not include text formatting, resulting in a much cleaner XML file with which to work.

Now, I can walk you through the steps of how you can use Text for Translations beyond the normal scope this tool was envisioned to be used for, but I'm going to let a Viewlet do the talking for me.
