A 'best practice' (as defined by Wikipedia) is a method or technique that has consistently shown results superior to those achieved by other means, and that is used as a benchmark. This is an important concept to not only understand, but equally as important to know when and how to implement in your Viewlets. Let's take a look at this when working with Message Objects.

ViewletBuilder8/ViewletQuiz5 offers three Message Objects: notes, balloons, and slide text. As a Viewlet Author, you most likely worked with each of these extensively while creating your Viewlets. But, do you know why different versions are available and the significance of when to use each? Read on...

Note
A note is used for general information. So, by default, when you insert notes, they are automatically placed at the front-end of the timeline. Keep in mind, though, you have the ability to place notes at any interval on a slide.

Balloon
A balloon is used for a call to action. By default, when you insert balloons, they are automatically placed AFTER notes along the timeline. Again, though, you have the ability to place balloons at any interval on a slide.

The automatic placement of notes and balloons along the timeline follows a best practice when displaying textual information (of this kind) to the learner in that...general information comes first (note) followed by a call to action (balloon) and then normally followed by the action itself.

Slide Text
A slide text element is used to add text to slides throughout the project to complement the main content. Slide text allows you to blend text seamlessly with any slide background, for additional visual impact.

To sum it up...when it comes to message objects in your Viewlet, use notes and balloons appropriately, following best practices for 'superior results', but don't be afraid to be creative and mix it up a bit too!

That's it for this blog.

Until next time...
Happy Viewleting!
