An Inside ‘Take’ on All Things Viewlet

As Viewlet Authors, we all know that effective trainers supplement their electronic eLearning assets with something tangible that viewers can use as a resource after their training is completed. These trainee ‘resources’ often come in the form of digital or printed handouts. In fact, ViewletBuilder7 and ViewletQuiz4 offer the ability to create these resource files right from the apps, but it doesn’t stop there.

Did you know that once you use ViewletBuilder7 or ViewletQuiz4 to create these files, you can then embed these resources directly into the applicable Viewlet? Once embedded, you can then create a link for trainees to click to download these supplemental materials for future reference.

Here are the steps to do this:

1. Create a Viewlet video using ViewletBuilder7 or ViewletQuiz4.

2. Publish a resource file (i.e., doc or pdf) of your Viewlet slides.

3. In Project > Project Properties > HTML Frame, add the file to your project.

4. Select text, a shape or an image to use as a link to the resource file.

5. Select the ‘Events’ (lightning bolt) icon and for the ‘On Click’ event, add the ‘Go to URL’ action.

6. In the ‘URL’ field, type JUST the file name (including the extension).

7. Select a ‘Destination’ window for the file.

8. Accept all the settings by clicking ‘OK’ until all the dialogs are closed.

9. Preview your Viewlet in a browser to test the link.

This trick of embedding resource files directly into a Viewlet and providing access to the files via a link is great for online Viewlets as well as those distributed offline. Give it a try and see how well your trainees respond.

That’s it for this blog.

Until next time...
Happy Viewleting!
