How to format exported Slide Notes in HTML

Postby Andrew » Wed Sep 22, 2010 8:04 am

If you'd like to format slides notes exported from ViewletBuilder or ViewletQuiz projects in HTML format here's an approach you can use. It utilizes XSL which is a language for transforming XML documents into XML or HTML, supported by all major browsers.

Here's the steps:

Step 1
Copy the following code and save it to a file named slide_notes.xsl

Code: Select all
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?>

<xsl:stylesheet version="1.0"

<xsl:template match="/">
  <h2>Slide Notes</h2>
  <table border="1">
    <tr bgcolor="#9acd32">
    <xsl:for-each select="exportedText/slide">
      <td><xsl:value-of select="@name"/></td>
      <td><xsl:value-of select="notes"/></td>

Step 2
Export the text from your project to XML via the File > Export > Text For Translation menu option. It should go in the same folder as your XSL file.

Step 3
Edit the XML file with a text editor program, such as Notepad on Windows.
Add the following line as the second line of the file.

<?xml-stylesheet type="text/xsl" href="slide_notes.xsl"?>

It should look something like this...

Code: Select all
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<?xml-stylesheet type="text/xsl" href="slide_notes.xsl"?>
<exportedText documentUuid="eb0ac968-6ec2-42d1-9ff7-7871da23c899">

Step 4
Open the XML file in your browser. FireFox or Internet Explorer. The browser will read the XML and format it using the XSL file into an HTML page.

It should look something like this:
